I have to say that I often prefer to hear non-English performances of Elgar. (Boult and Barbirolli are still tops, though.) Ormandy had, I think, a natural aptitude for conducting English music. A shame he didn't record more of it. His album of Delius, for example, is one of the best things he ever made. Looking forward to hearing this very much.
Thank you for these virtuoso variations from Philadelphia! I would be intrigued to hear anything else you have with Ormandy/PO, especially around this vintage.
