Don't be afraid about the recording quality after the first seconds of listening: in this passage Abbado's pianissimo is truly ethereal and the acoustics of the large Dresden hall is certainly not ideal. Then things get immediately better and personally I've been more and more involved in this intense and concentrated performance, preferring it overall both the Abbado-DG recordings. This is precisely why I propose it to you. The quartet of singers is well balanced and valid: in the sound of the orchestra (always appropriate colors, particularly in the intense but severe singing of the cellos & double basses) and in some great choral moments - the powerful overhang of the Sanctus, for example - I find the best of the Verdi tradition connected to the Teatro alla Scala.
