Mahler 1 - LSO, Kubelik - live 1975

MAHLER
Symphony no. 1

London Symphony Orchestra
RAFAEL KUBELIK

Live - 16 october 1975

Although we have many Mahlerian studio and live recordings made by Kubelik
(those published by Audite were a wonderful surprise),
the LSO is definitely not an orchestra
strictly associated with the name of the czech conductor.
So, many reasons to be curious.

Apart from a little tape hiss, the quality of the source is quite good.

Thanks for sharing this. The LSO has done a fair amount of Mahler as well, but I have never seen this combination before.
Best wishes, Louis.

Great blog. Wonderful Mahler 1 with Kubelik and LSO.
Do you happen to have some Clemens Krauss live recordings?

Oh this is indeed exciting! I've long believed Kubelik to be the finest exponent of Mahler 1 (even moreso than Horenstein IMHO).

And, of course, the LSO is a great Mahler orchestra with many examples under their belts, from Horenstein's 1959 8th, via Solti's 1960s 1st, 2nd and 9th, to Horenstein's 1970 1 and 3, to mention just a few. Not to mention Goldshmidt's premiere (1964) of the first complete version of Cooke's "performing edition" of the 10th.

Many thanks!

I should also have mentioned that one of my (many) concertgoing regrest is that in 1981, then the EUYO was touring Britain, Kubelik was scheduled to conduct the 1st at the Royal Albert Hall. My wife and I attended, but alas ill-health caused him to withdraw and it was conducted by Abbado.

Nothing against Abbado, but he was no Kubelik.

Thank you for this rarity. Coincidentally, just yesterday I watched the YouTube video of David Hurwitz in which he discusses over 20 recordings of the Mahler 1 and picks the Kubelik with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra on DGG as his favorite.
