Mahler 4 - NYPO, Walter - Live 1944

GUSTAV MAHLER
Symphony no. 4

Desi Halban, soprano
New York Philharmonic
BRUNO WALTER

New York, Carnegie Hall
Live - 6 February 1944

If I'm not wrong, never published in any form:
maybe for the little gap at the beginning
and the quality of recording, certainly not superb
(but I don't know if a better source survives).

Despite the listening conditions,
I certainly prefer this live (and the BSO 1947 live too, on Lys),
insted of the famous may 10, 1945 studio recording - all with Desi Halban.
More freedom, a much more interesting and varied phrasing
and simply more inspiration, here.

Try and let me know your opinions.

I agree. This is a much more energized and, at the same time, more subtle performance. The Philharmonic front-desk soloists play like gods and even the often-criticized Halban much better. Thanks for this!

(I have never heard the Boston version and the Dante/Lys label is long gone.)

Thanks for this.

I agree with Kirk and Charlot's comments, as well as yours - even with the compromised sound and skewed balances (sounding at points like a horn concerto and with subtleties in extreme soft sections requiring some imagination to "hear") it's a wonderful supplement to Walter's other commercial and concert recordings - and kudos to Halban. Thanks so much for providing this!

Hi friends, of course I agree with your comments.

I can upload the 1947 BSO performance too, if you're interested.

I would love to hear the BSO performance. Thanks

Appreciate your Walter rarity; thanks. Would also love to hear the live 1947 version.

Mediafire ha a NEW insidious trick. It does not spawn external ads but generates its own popup pages with its own advertising, which your adblocker doesn't catch. You could formerly close the pages but NOW if you do, it closes your browser instantly, killing your DL also.

My fix for this is to put the cursor onto the green radio button for download, right click and copy the link, and then to post it into a 7 year old version of Firefox, totally obsolete, in which the Javascripting has been turned off. Then the DL comes in directly with no popup ads (which COULD be dangerous, depending on what they do.)

Mediafire remains my only choice at the moment, it has always been a very good service for those who have to share and for those who have to download files.
I know of no alternatives, honestly (a part from Toscanini posts, stored on Mega, and something on Google drive).
