The Symphony was premiered on 30 October 1957,
by the USSR Symphony Orchestra (conductor Natan Rakhlin).
This is the 1st performance outside USSR: the US Premiere was given
by Stokowski and the Houston SO a few months later, on 7 April 1958.

I would love to know how Sargent was able to wrangle the Western premiere of this piece. I would have thought Stokowski would be all over it!!!

Thank you so much for this. I have long held Sargent's Everest recording of the Symphony No.9 in high regard and it is a great pity that he wasn't invited to record much more Shostakovich when he is clearly so in tune with it. The same with Adrian Boult's recording of No.6, also for Everest.
And an idiot reviewer for Fanfare magazine in the Sept/Oct 2019 issue dares to state that there are no distinguished recordings of Shostakovich by English conductors.
