MAHLER
Symphony no. 5
Houston Symphony
SIR JOHN BARBIROLLI
Live in New York, Carnegie Hall
March 24, 1966
Like the previous "Titan" conducted by Krips,
this unpublished Fifth is also very "adventurous",
outside the box and completely different from the 1969 studio version.
Contrarily to the "routine Mahler" which unfortunately is often heard today,
this is a visionary and suffered performance rich of surprises and contrasts.

ReplyDeleteHi Guido,
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for this rarity! Is this concert from Mar 23 or 24? The image you posted says Mar 24 while the post says it was on Mar 23. Thanks!
24, the correct date is on the cover.

ReplyDeleteThank you very much. Nice!

Magnificent. I've heard this version on youtube but this is much easier listening. I love the Barbirolli EMI Mahlers but his 5 and 6 are even more gripping in the live versions I think.
