Wagner - Complete Ring - Joseph Keilberth (Bayreuth 1952)

Here a second (and not last) Ring.

I can't say anything about the quality of the alternative Archipel set; anyway this Golden Melodram transfer is pretty good.

Golden Melodram supposedly has the original Grundig tape recorder and access to the tapes that Bayrueth made at the time of the performances. At least that is what I was told. I remember tramping around New York City with the owner trying to find parts for the recorder.

Difficult finding spare parts for Grundig in NYC! You can maybe get them in Germany. I managed to get a used hand manual for an old open reel valve portable Grundig from Germany. I suppose if I had had to take it further, I may have gotten to spare parts. Fortunately the set worked well. Hadn't been used ever or very little.

In the meantime, let's enjoy this great conductor, in the Melodram which is a great transfer. Especially knowing the inside story from the source itself!!

The owner of Melodram -- actually the owner's son -- was in NYC for business and stopped by to pick up some open reel opera tapes I had for him. We went out on the town and ended up looking for parts on East 86th Street, at that time still known as Germantown (Yorkville). i remember we found a few parts there - and I remember the wonderful Königsberger Klopse at Cafe Geiger.

Progress Hornsby, your travels sound so exciting. I've stayed in NYC, never lived there and had NO IDEA there was a "Germantown"... I am of German descent. We should have met when I used to travel frequently to NYC and the US. Those times are way gone. But I have had one failed intent in 2001 through an internet forum RE.Martha Argerich, to travel to NYC on an invitation extended by members of the group to hear her play... I got sick and was unable to get off the ground. Now my only traveling is done via the internet and after year after year of endless travels, I now sit glued to my PC, HOWEVER never losing hope that life will change and I will eventually be able to repeat a lifetime on boats, planes and trains.... Merry Christmas! Today Buenos Aires will be 37ºC in the shade! Love to all, Maria

Thank you very much for this! Until now, the best sound for this cycle came from the very early Paragon CD edition from Italy, though it has become a collector's item. It was the only one that didn't use the mediocre Melodram LPs as a source. I'm looking forward to hearing this edition. Would a mirror on fileserve be at all possible? It behaves better than megaupload.
